Arellano Backs Effort to Retain Experienced Investigators

State Senator Li Arellano Jr (R-Dixon) advanced legislation out of the Senate that modernizes provisions in Illinois law governing the service of investigators under the Secretary of State’s office.

“This updates the law to reflect today’s workforce and recognizes the value of experienced investigators,” Senator Arellano said. “We should not be forcing qualified individuals out of service when they are still fully capable of doing the job.”

House Bill 2270, originally sponsored in the House by State Representative Patrick Sheehan (R-Lockport), amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to allow investigators enforcing laws under the Secretary of State to remain in service until age 65, up from the current limit of 60. The legislation removes an outdated exemption for individuals employed as Capitol Police Investigators, ensuring consistency across roles.

“This is an important step to keep experienced investigators on the job and strengthen public safety,” said Rep. Sheehan. “These are professionals with years of knowledge and proven judgment, and this legislation ensures we don’t lose that experience before its time.”

The change aligns Illinois law with broader workforce trends and allows agencies to retain skilled personnel with years of institutional knowledge and experience.

The legislation now moves on to the governor’s desk for further action.
