As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, I want to take a moment to remind the residents of Whiteside County to enjoy the holiday safely, respectfully, and within the law.
Fireworks are a tradition on the 4th of July, and we know many of you will be lighting them off. While we understand the spirit of celebration, it’s important to remember that setting off fireworks—especially illegal or late–night displays can be a nuisance or even a danger to others. If our office receives complaints, our deputies will respond, and depending on the situation, enforcement action may be taken.
Please be mindful of your neighbors. Many veterans, young children, and individuals with sensory sensitivities can be negatively impacted by loud fireworks. Pets and livestock are also frequently frightened or harmed by unexpected explosions. What might seem like harmless fun to some can cause real stress or danger to others.
Also, fireworks and alcohol are a bad combination. If you’ve been drinking, do not handle fireworks-leave that to someone who is sober and alert.
In addition, I want to make it clear: drinking and driving will not be tolerated. The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office has increased patrols throughout the holiday weekend. If you choose to drive impaired, expect to be stopped. We will have zero tolerance for those who put lives at risk by getting behind the wheel under the influence.
Let’s make this 4th of July a celebration we can all enjoy safely, legally, and with respect for one another. Thank you for doing your part.
Have a safe and happy Independence Day.
Sheriff John F. Booker
Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office
