Illinois residents are being urged by the State Fire Marshal to test and inspect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as daylight saving time ends this weekend. So far this year, 89 residential fire deaths have occurred in Illinois, with most fatalities in homes lacking working smoke alarms.
Officials stress that smoke detectors save lives and recommend replacing any alarms over 10 years old with updated, sealed-battery models. Residents are also encouraged to review and practice fire escape plans, check that escape routes are clear, and schedule furnace inspections to prevent carbon monoxide exposure. Stay safe and make fire prevention a family priority.
