Jury Selection Under Scrutiny in Whiteside County

A recent judicial ruling has exposed more than three decades of wrongful exclusion of qualified jurors in Whiteside County. The verdict follows a challenge from a defense attorney, who uncovered that the Clerk’s Office had systematically removed individuals under 22 or over 79 years old, residents owing court fees, and people with prior criminal charges—even if not convicted—from the jury pool.

Legal experts warn this practice may have undermined the fairness and diversity of countless trials. County officials now face calls for immediate reforms to restore public trust and ensure the constitutional right to a truly representative jury.
