On Saturday, January 11th, at approximately 10:53am, Rock Falls Police responded to the 500 block of 2nd Avenue for a report of a person who had fired a handgun in the backyard of a residence. Rock Falls officers, along with officers from the Sterling Police Department and Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, went to the area and learned from a witness that the person who had fired the gun was inside the residence at 502 2nd Avenue.
A perimeter around the residence was established and additional resources were requested.
Rock Falls Police were able to identify the individual and learned they were experiencing a mental health crisis. Police were able to make phone contact with the person and arrange for them to surrender. At approximately 12:14pm the individual exited the house, unarmed, and was taken into custody without incident. The person was transported to CGH Medical Center for an evaluation.
The case remains under investigation at this time. No names will be released unless criminal charges are filed.
