Community Alert: Counterfeit & “Motion Picture” Currency Circulating Locally.

To all local businesses:

We want to alert you that there have been recent incidents of counterfeit bills and “motion picture use only” currency being passed at several establishments in town.

These fake bills are often passed during busy hours or used for small transactions to avoid suspicion. Some may closely resemble legitimate currency but are marked with phrases like “For Motion Picture Use Only” or have inaccurate coloring, texture, or security features.

What You Can Do: Train staff to inspect bills carefully, especially $20, $50, and $100 denominations. Look for security features like watermarks, security threads, color-shifting ink, and raised printing. Be alert for bills that feel different in texture or size. Use counterfeit detection pens or UV lights if available.

If you encounter a suspicious bill: Do not confront the individual and simply deny the transaction. Try to note a description of the person and any accompanying vehicle. Retain the bill if possible, and contact your local police department immediately.

Please help spread awareness to neighboring businesses. Together, we can reduce the impact of these fraudulent activities in our community.

For questions or to report suspicious activity, please contact the Polo Police Department at 815-946-3412 or if an emergency call 911.
