The Rock Falls Police Department is investigating a series of three attempted vehicle thefts and one successful vehicle theft (later recovered) which have been reported over the past few days.
Three of these incidents involved Kia vehicles. Owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles are strongly urged to contact the dealership to ensure their vehicles have updated security features as there are known vulnerabilities which can be exploited to allow the vehicle to be driven without a key being used.
Unfortunately, there are many social media videos that instruct those with criminal intentions on how to steal these vehicles and which ones to look for.
Residents are reminded:
1. Keep your vehicle locked at all times
2. Do not keep the key in the vehicle or in close proximity to the vehicle.
3. Do not keep valuable items in the vehicle.
4. Report suspicious activity to your local law enforcement agency.
If you have information about these incidents, please contact the Rock Falls Police Department at 815-622-1140 or call Whiteside County Crimestoppers at 815-625-STOP(7867)
