Rep. Fritts – Budget Deadline Looms with Talk of Tax Increases
Sunday at midnight is the constitutional deadline for having the FY2027 state budget approved. That still 3 days to get it done, but so far things are not moving very quickly.
The two Democrat legislative leaders met midweek with the governor and rumors say there was not a lot of progress to report. House Republican members say it’s a matter of waiting and seeing what comes out of the negotiations but word in the Capitol is House Democrat leadership has been talking with their membership about possible tax increases to fund their projects in the budget..
Fritts said Illinois is truly becoming a place that is unaffordable to live.
Capitol pundits have pointed to Democrats signaling a willingness to raise taxes as the deadline approaches and suggest taxpayers pay close attention to the emerging warning signs such as revenue estimates weaker than the governor projected and proposals advancing without identified funding sources.
