A body was found in a home after a devastating fire on Sunday, in rural Sterling. The discovery was made on Monday by Whiteside County officials in the aftermath of the blaze that engulfed a residence on Mill Street.

The fire, which drew a response from 16 different departments, was battled by firefighters who faced heavy smoke and fire on the first floor. Efforts to search the structure were halted when parts of the ceiling collapsed, forcing crews to fight the flames from outside.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, led by the Sterling Fire Department, Illinois State Fire Marshal, and the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office. Further details are expected to be released on today.
