Simmons Street and Parking Lot H will fully reopen for public use by the end of Friday, October 10th, following months of revitalization work in downtown Galesburg. Construction crews have completed major infrastructure improvements, including resurfaced asphalt, upgraded ADA-compliant sidewalks, improved storm sewers, and new decorative lighting. While the road and parking lot reopen, crews will finish landscaping and install benches, trash bins, a pedestrian canopy, and bike racks, all with minimal future disruption. City officials credit the enhancements to the Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Streets Grant and express confidence that the final touches will be wrapped up before construction season ends.
“Thanks to a Rebuild Illinois Downtown and Main Streets Grant, we’ve had the invaluable opportunity to significantly enhance our downtown core, making it more accessible and welcoming,” said Aaron Gavin, Director of Public Works. “We are proud of the progress and look forward to delivering the final, transformative touches—on schedule—before the construction season wraps up.”
“The successful completion of this project, which modernizes our infrastructure and beautifies our downtown, is a tangible sign of the forward momentum underway in our community,” said City Manager Eric Hanson. “While we celebrate this success, we simultaneously push forward with strategic investments throughout our community, including job growth, neighborhood enhancement, and recreational improvements that will benefit all Galesburg residents.”
