In Kewanee, a concerning discovery on a local school bus prompted a police investigation on Friday afternoon. A .32 caliber bullet was found on a bus belonging to Kewanee Unit School District #229 (KCUSD) by a staff member. KCUSD #229 staff learned through students that a juvenile had shown ammunition to other students. This discovery led law enforcement to a nearby residence, where they found more ammunition. The juvenile’s backpack was searched with the consent of the family, and a 9 mm round was discovered. Additional ammunition of various calibers was found in the basement of the residence, including .32 caliper rounds that matched the bullet found on the school bus. The residents of the home fully cooperated with law enforcement and agreed to secure the ammunition in a locked area with their firearms. No firearms were found in the possession of the juvenile, and no firearms were taken to school.

“KPD commends the student who provided the information that led to the identification of the young juvenile and emphasizes the importance of vigilance in maintaining school safety. The Kewanee Police Department continues to work closely with KCUSD #229 to ensure the well-being of all students and staff.”

Although no charges have been filed yet, both police and school authorities are taking the incident seriously, emphasizing the safety of students and the community. Investigations continue as officials work to ensure such incidents are thoroughly addressed and prevented in the future. Superintendent Mrs. Rebecca Baney is unable to comment on the incident while it’s an active investigation.
