Teddy Bear Hospital Teaches Kids About Veterinary Careers at Black Hawk College Event

Stuffed animals received top-notch medical care at Black Hawk College’s third annual Teddy Bear Hospital. The third annual event drew 82 children who brought their beloved plush companions for checkups, gaining hands-on experience in veterinary care at stations like X-rays, bandaging, and surgery. The event, led by all 25 students in the BHC Veterinary Technology Program, aimed to inspire the next generation of animal caregivers. Dr. Colleen Lewis described the atmosphere as “filled with wonder and excitement.” Partnering with the Henry County Humane Society, the event also collected donations for the Kewanee Animal Shelter, raising $431 plus an additional $100 from the Wethersfield High School Key Club. The BHC Veterinary Technology Program is accepting applications for Fall 2025 and will host an open house on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 1-4 PM.

BHC Student Ambassadors and the BHC Student Chapter of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (SCNAVTA) also helped with the event.

“The students create such a warm and welcoming environment for the children to pass through the six phases of the veterinary clinic,” said Dr. Colleen Lewis, lead veterinarian for the BHC Veterinary Technology Program. “Wonder and excitement fill the air as our next generation of animal caregivers learn about what it takes to keep an animal happy and healthy,” she said.

Louise Harrison, president of the Kewanee Animal Shelter Board, said the Teddy Bear Hospital is one of her favorite humane society events. “Watching the children learning about the importance of caring for their pets is endearing and inspirational,” she said.
