17-year-old Accidentally Shoots Himself while Handling a Gun, Gun Never Found

A 17-year-old male shot himself in the buttocks while handling a firearm in the 800 Block of Birch Place in Kewanee on January 22, 2023.  Around 11:30 AM, Henry County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a 911 call for a gunshot wound.  Deputies and Officers found a 17-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the buttocks, according to the press release.  He was transported to St. Luke in Kewanee and later transferred to OSF St. Francis in Peoria.  The investigation determined the juvenile had accidentally shot himself while handling a firearm.  Law Enforcement conducted searches on houses in the 800 block of Birch Place and the 300 block of Franklin Street but were unable to find the firearm at either location.  According to the press release, Two associates of the 17-year-old male were present during the shooting and may have removed the firearm from the scene prior to the arrival of Law Enforcement.

The 17-year-old male will be issued a Juvenile Referral Form to the Henry County Probation Office for Preliminary charges of Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm without a FOID card.
