The Kewanee Fire Department announced a burn ban and fireworks ban for the City of Kewanee effective immediately due to severe drought conditions in and around Kewanee. The ban includes backyard fire pits, Wednesday and Saturday landscape burn days and all fireworks. Most fireworks are already prohibited in Kewanee but the burn ban includes fireworks such as smoke bombs and sparklers.

The annual Kewanee Fourth of July fireworks show is up in the air as well.  A decision whether or not to allow the professional fireworks show will be made on June 27, 2023.

According Chief Stephen Welgat, the public will be notified when the Kewanee Fire Department lifts the burn ban.  The burn ban will be enforced by the Kewanee Police and Fire Departments and violators will be fined in accordance with City of Kewanee ordinances.
