Charges have been filed in the case of a 6 year old who was shot in the hand on August 13th. According to information provided by Kewanee Deputy Chief Steven Kijanowski, charges have been filed against 37 year old Nicholas Mitro of Kewanee. Charges are under the Firearms: Child Protection Act, a violation of which is a Class C Misdemeanor. Mitro was also charged with Endangering the Life or Health of a Child, a Class A Misdemeanor. A Class A Misdemeanor carries a potential sentence of up to 364 days in jail.
On August 13th, Kewanee Police were called to a location on Rice Street regarding shots fired. At the scene, Police were told that a vehicle had just left the location at a high rate of speed. That vehicle was taking a gunshot victim to OSF Saint Luke Medical Center. Further investigation determined that the victim was a 6 year old child that had been shot in the hand. At the Rice Street location, in the 400 block of Rice Street, Kewanee Police executed a Search Warrant on the residence in question. Inside, Police located a loaded 9mm semi automatic pistol, one spent 9mm casing, and a surveillance system. A bullet hole from the incident was found in the ceiling of the kitchen in the residence.
