Landmarks Illinois have announced six landmarks that will receive matching grants for upkeep and or repair of historic sites and the City of Kewanee will be receiving one of the grants. According to Landmarks Illinois, $22,000 was earmarked for grants to be divided among 6 projects, one of which is the Woodland Palace. $3,500 in matching grant funds have been awarded to the City of Kewanee, intended for priority repairs to the Woodland Palace, built by Fred Francis in 1889. Francis spent 37 making the home into a remarkable feat of architecture and design, so much so that it has been recognized and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is no word on when the repairs will get underway but according to Landmarks Illinois, the priority work will be done on the roof of the Palace, the Solarium and the foundation.
