The City of Galesburg has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the State of Illinois to conduct a comprehensive operations analysis of the city’s public transportation system.

The grant is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and there is no local city match required. These funds are being awarded under the Metropolitan Transportation Planning and State and Non-Metropolitan Planning and Research (Fed Section 5305 (e)) and Transit Statewide/Non-Metropolitan Planning – State.

The scope of this two-year grant is to complete a comprehensive study of the city’s public transportation system, which will include analyzing demand, conducting a passenger use survey, and assessing opportunities for expansion and collaboration. The parameters of the study are set by IDOT, and the City will work with IDOT to select a consulting firm that will complete the study.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to conduct a comprehensive review of our public transportation system,” said Kraig Boynton, Transit Manager. “The insights and in-depth analysis ascertained by the consultant will provide the City and IDOT with the needed information to make informed decisions, and successfully plan for the future of public transportation in Galesburg.”

City staff applied for the grant in 2022, with the Galesburg City Council authorizing submittal of the grant application at the March 7, 2022 City Council meeting. The City of Galesburg was notified they were awarded the grant in January 2023, and the City Council subsequently approved the grant agreement for the transportation study at the February 6, 2023 City Council meeting.

The City of Galesburg offers both fixed-route bus services and paratransit services. The fixed route bus service operates Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM – 6:15 PM, and information on routes, fares, and additional information can be found on the city’s website.
