Galesburg Fire Department Battled Two Fires Overnight

The Galesburg Fire Department battled two large fires overnight and one structure suffered significant damage. There were no occupants in the residences at the time of the fires and a family dog from the Yates Street fire was found safe outside the home. The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Arnold Street around 10:20 PM on November 2, 2023. All three stations responded to the fire to find smoke coming from the eaves and rear of the residence. Battalion Chief Brackett established command of the scene. The Brooks Street station attacked the fire from the rear of the residence, while the Central Station established a water supply and performed a search of the residence. The Fremont Street Station provided ventilation to help with heavy smoke inside the structure. The fire caused smoke damage throughout the first floor and the rear of the house suffered fire damage. Initial damage is estimated at $15,000. An emergency callback of off-duty fire personnel was initiated to provide emergency coverage for the City. Galesburg Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be unintentional.

The Galesburg Fire Department responded to the second fire on Yates Street around 6 AM this morning. All three stations responded to the fire to find smoke coming from the front door and rear of the residence. Battalion Chief Brackett established command of the scene. The Central Station used multiple hoses to attack the fire, while the Fremont Street Station established a water supply from a nearby hydrant and used a second line to attack the fire from the front door. The Brooks Street station performed a search of the residence and provided ventilation to remove heavy smoke from the structure. The dog was able to escape the fire and was found safe outside the residence. The fire caused extensive smoke and fire damage throughout the main floor and fire damage throughout the residence.  Initial damage is estimated at $41,000. An emergency callback of off-duty fire personnel was initiated to provide emergency coverage for the City. The cause of the fire is undetermined and is still under investigation by Galesburg Fire investigators.
