The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire early Sunday morning and rescued a resident from the second-story apartment. The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Chambers Street on December 18, 2022, at 2:06 AM. Crews arrived to find the front of the two-story structure engulfed in flames. Acting Battalion Chief Joe Grodjesk established command and the Central and Brooks Street Station crews worked attack lines to extinguish the fire. Captain Steve Selliers and the Fremont Street crew forced entry to the second-story apartment and assisted the sole resident to evacuate the building. GHAS evaluated the resident at the scene. No injuries were reported. Off-duty personnel was initiated to provide emergency coverage for the city and provide additional personnel at the scene due to weather conditions. A preliminary damage estimate is $44,000 and the building was deemed a total loss. The cause of the fire has been determined intentional and remains under investigation by the Galesburg Police and Fire Investigators.
