Geneseo Police Chief Casey Disterhoft announced on Tuesday that the City of Geneseo had purchased and will be installing License Plate Reading cameras. The Police Chief announced on Facebook that the City of Geneseo would be deploying two Automated License Plate Reading Cameras at unspecified locations in the City of Geneseo. According to the release from the Geneseo Police Department, the cameras “help neighborhoods, communities and law enforcement work together to fight crime.” The cameras come from a company called Flock Safety of Atlanta, Georgia. In the announcement, Chief Disterhoft stated that the cameras only capture license plates and the characteristics of vehicles and not the faces of drivers or occupants. He also stated that the data collected is not sold and can only be used when their is a justifiable reason for it.
