The family of Kewanee Police Chief Nick Welgat has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise fund for the Chief’s fight against Stage 4 Lung Cancer. Chief Welgat recently shared his Cancer diagnosis in a post on his personal social media where he revealed the diagnosis of Stage 4 Lung Cancer and stated that he was beginning treatment but feeling relatively well. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming ever since including the response to the GoFundMe which launched this week with a goal of raising $50,000 and has already raised more than $42,000.

Meanwhile, WKEI reached out to Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore for a statement and the Mayor issued heartfelt words of support:

“Nick is a great father, husband, friend, and one of the finest police officers I have ever known. I have watched him grow from the first days of his career, to his present position, Chief of Police. He is a Chief I would have been happy to serve under. After Troy Ainley retired, and I was asked who my choice for Kewanee’s next Chief of Police would be, my one and only reply was Nick Welgat, and he has not disappointed anyone. I am behind Nick as his Mayor, friend, and fellow officer, 100%. Nick is a strong man, and if anyone is capable of beating this horrible disease, it is Nick Welgat.”
