Highway 150 from Galesburg to Alpha Designated “Deputy Sheriff Nick Weist Memorial Highway”

Representative Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) announced the Illinois House of Representatives adopted House Joint Resolution 93 Wednesday morning which designates Illinois Highway 150 from Main Street in Galesburg to Illinois Route 17 in Alpha as the “Deputy Sheriff Nick Weist Memorial Highway”.

Knox County Sheriff’s Office Deputy, Deputy Weist, 34, was struck and killed by a vehicle as he deployed spike strips during a vehicle pursuit of an armed suspect on April 29th of this year.  Deputy Weist was on his way home when he heard his fellow officers were in pursuit of a armed suspect that fired at officers.  Instead of going home, Deputy Weist positioned himself on Highway 150, south of Alpha, and prepared to deploy stop sticks.  The suspect vehicle swerved in the direction of Deputy Weist to avoid the stop sticks and struck Deputy Weist.  A Gerard Fire Department Volunteer, Donovan Swartz witnessed the vehicle strike Deputy Weist and immediately began life-saving measures until additional officers and emergency personnel arrived on scene.  Representative Dan Swanson said “Deputy Weist may of saved many young children’s lives”.  “At the time of the incident, just a mile away, Alwood Elementary School children were crossing Route 150 to attend school which sits at a corner along the highway.”  “It is unimaginable what could have been without Deputy Weist’s heroic actions.”  Listen to State Representative Dan Swanson’s full statement from the House Floor below.
