In the run-up to Valentine’s Day, Illinois’ Attorney General Kwame Raoul is urging residents to be aware of potential romance scams when dating online. Cautioning against the tactics employed by fraudsters such as creating fake profiles, Raoul advocates for caution. He advises to only communicate via dating platforms until trust is established, to guard personal details, and to be wary of requests for financial information or assistance. Raoul emphasizes no shame should be felt in falling victim, urging people to save communication records, cease contact, block the scammer’s contacts and report the incident to local police, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center and the FTC.
