Athletic Director Tim Atwell tells WKEI that Kewanee students performed over the weekend at the IHSA State Solo and Ensemble contest and here is what Mr. Atwell tells us…
On Saturday, March 5th, Kewanee High School Band & Choir students competed at the IHSA State Solo/Ensemble Contest held at Monmouth-Roseville High School. Kewanee had by far their most successful outing in school history with the Band taking first place statewide with a score of 348 points over Oregon (264) and Chester (258). The KHS Choir has their best score since digital tracking began in 1997 with 162 points, placing 6th.
Solo/Ensemble is part of the larger IHSA Music Sweepstakes which is used to crown “State Champions” in Music. Kewanee’s outstanding efforts have the school currently sitting in 2nd place statewide for Music Sweepstakes. The IHSA Music Organization Contest on April 14th-15th is the second and final round and will determine overall standings.
Dozens of students earned Division I (Superior) ratings at Saturday’s contest. The highest point earners were Cooper Bates (29), Bethany Olalde (27.75), Victoria Dennison (20.25), Kiersten Yordy (20), and Sheadon Oetzel (14). Each judge awards a “Best of Day” recognition for the finest performance heard all day. Three Kewanee events earned this honor: Brennyn Ford (Piano), Marcos Pagan (Snare Drum), and Natalie Maxon/Marcos Pagan (Marimba Duet).
