On Friday, January 19th, as part of Kewanee’s basketball game against Mendota, the school celebrated, Salute to America Night. The Kewanee High School Band performed all four military anthems, honoring all four branches of the American military, members of the VFW and local Color Guard were out to display the flag, and local veterans were honored while a large cake was served to those in attendance. Kewanee Athletic Director Tim Atwell shared with RegionalMediaNews.com WKEI a proclamation that was read as part of the event…

Kewanee High School would also like to take
this opportunity to wish the VFW Happy
Birthday. The National VFW Organization is
125 years old this year. Locally, Kewanee VFW
Post #8078 has been presenting the colors at
all home varsity boys basketball games since
1981. We are honored and humbled by their
support of our students. Ladies and gentlemen,
if you are not already on your feet, please rise
and let’s give the VFW a standing ovation.

At halftime, when you come into the concession
stand to get a piece of cake, there will also be a
commemorative pen for you to take as well.
While it is a small gesture of thanks, we want to
show our support to our local VFW. We
appreciate all they have done for the country,
our community and school.

Salute to America Night at Kewanee High School has been a tradition at the school since 1981.
