A Kewanee man is charged with unlawful use of a weapon following an incident where he displayed a gun from his vehicle while looking for a teenager in Fairview on Tuesday night. Kewanee Police responded to Fairview Homes for a complaint of an unknown individual looking for a teenage that lives in Fairview while displaying a gun around 9 PM. Officers were unable to locate the male subject at the time and, during the investigation, DeAngelo Garner, 32, of Kewanee was arrested for assault after he became confrontational and aggressive with officers. Garner was released with a Notice to Appear.
Around 10 PM, Kewanee Police received a call that the subject with a gun was back in the area in the same vehicle. Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description in the 500 block of East 3rd Street. Officers identified the suspect as Brian Ocampo, 21, of Kewanee and placed him under arrest and later transported him to the Henry County Jail. Officers located a Glock handgun with a loaded extended magazine, a second Glock handgun with an extended magazine and two Smith and Wesson handguns. Officers also collected 181 rounds of ammunition from the vehicle.
On September 20, 2023, The Henry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed formal charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (Class 4 Felony) against Ocampo. Ocampo was placed on supervised release and a Preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 25, 2023 at 1 PM. Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon carries a potential sentence of 1 to 3 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
