In the early hours of Wednesday, May 10th, Kewanee Police received a call regarding shots being fired at a passing vehicle in the area of the 700 Block of Florence Avenue. At the scene, Police were unable to locate the vehicle or the suspected shooter but Police were able to recover shell casings and begin an investigation that would lead to several arrests. According to Kewanee Police, a series of witness interviews led Kewanee Police to 19 year old Jacob Dailey at a residence in the 300 block of Ridyard Avenue. At that residence, Police located and arrested Jacob Dailey and a 16 year old male juvenile as suspects in the shooting.
While at the residence, Officers located a loaded 9mm Ruger semi-automatic pistol containing rounds consistent with the shell casings recovered in the 700 block of Florence Street. Dailey and the 16-year-old male juvenile were arrested and transported to the Kewanee Police Department. There, Police located several more weapons and ammunition, including a loaded Ruger 9mm semi-automatic pistol with the serial number defaced, a break action 12 gauge shotgun, a Savage Arms 410 shotgun, a Glenfield .22 caliber rifle, and a Marlin .22 caliber rifle. Some of the 9mm rounds found with the Ruger 9mm located during the search warrant were also consistent with the shell casings collected in the 700 block of Florence Street.
Jacob Dailey was subsequently charged with several gun related crimes including Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony), Possession of a Firearm with Defaced Serial Number (Class 3 Felony), and two counts of Possession of a Firearm without a FOID (Class A). The Class 1 Felony carries a possible prison sentence of 4 to 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Dailey was also wanted on a Henry County Warrant for failure to appear on charges of Failure to Return from Furlough, Criminal Damage to Property, Theft, and various traffic-related violations. The 16-year-old male juvenile was released to his parents without charges. Dailey remains in custody on a $100,000 (10%) bond. A Preliminary Hearing is scheduled for May 15, 2023, at 1 PM.
