Kewanee Police Chief Nick Welgat broke the news on his personal social media today that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer.

“I need to share some news with all of you, and social media seems to be the easiest way to relay this information to our family and friends. I have recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. I will be starting chemotherapy next week, and will be meeting with the radiation oncologist in the next few days to discuss adding in some radiation treatments as well. Obviously, this is devastating news for us, and we would appreciate your love, support, and mostly your prayers during this journey. Other than some neck pain, I am feeling relatively good. I will continue to work as much as possible during this time. I know many of you may have questions, but please defer them for now as we are still trying to process all of this ourselves. Words of encouragement are always appreciated.”

Police Chief Nick Welgat has been the Kewanee Chief of Police since November 0f 2020 when he took over the position from Chief Troy Ainley.
