A Kewanee Police Officer has been placed on Paid Administrative leave following the officer involved shooting in Toulon on February 18, 2023. According to the Kewanee Police Department, it is protocol to place officers, involved in incidents like this, on paid administrative leave. The Kewanee Police Department has officers assigned to the Henry County Special Operations Squad. The Henry County Special Operations Squad is a multi-agency team of officers and deputies from Henry and Stark County Agencies.

According to the Illinois State Police, Henry County Special Operations Squad was serving an arrest/search warrant at an apartment in the 500 block of North Olive Street when the occupant of the residence attempted to strike Officers with a machete. Officers discharged their weapons striking the male subject. The male subject was transported to an area hospital where he was declared deceased. No officers were injured during the incident.
This investigation is ongoing and being handled by Illinois State Police, Division of Criminal Investigation.
