No injuries were reported from a kitchen fire in a third floor apartment in Galesburg Thursday night. The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 170 S. West Street around 5:22 PM on September 7, 2023. Fire crews from all three stations responded to the fire and encountered heavy smoke in the third-floor hallway. Battalion Chief Dave Farrell established command of the scene and the Central Station Fire crew located the fire in a kitchen in an apartment on the third floor. The fire was quickly extinguished and the Frement and Brooks Station crews worked to removed smoke from the third-floor apartments. The only occupant in the apartment safely exited the apartment at the time of the fire.
The interior of the apartment sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. No injuries were reported. Preliminary damage estimates are at $7,000. An emergency callback of off-duty fire personnel was initiated to provide emergency coverage for the City. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, due to cooking, by Galesburg Fire Department Investigators.
