Traffic Stop for Expired Registration Recovers Cash and an Ounce of Meth

An early morning traffic stop for expired registration and no turn signal recovers 32 grams of methamphetamine. A Kewanee Police Officer stopped a vehicle in the 500 block of Park Avenue on January 6, 2023, around 1:30 AM for expired registration and failure to signal a turn.  Justin Stanley, 18, of Kewanee was placed under arrest for driving on a revoked driver’s license. A search of the vehicle and vehicle occupants found 32.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine, packaging materials and $2,995 in cash. Justin Stanley and passenger, David Phillips, 38, both of Kewanee, were transported to the Kewanee Police Department. David Phillips was released with a citation for possession of adult-use cannabis in a vehicle. Stanley was processed and transported to the Henry County Jail.

Stanley is charged with Possession of 15-100 Grams of Methamphetamine (Class 1 Felony) and Intent to Deliver 15-100 Grams of Methamphetamine (Class X Felony), plus traffic citations. A Class X Felony has a potential sentence of 6-30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Justin Stanley remains in custody on a $30,000 (10%) bond. Stanley indicated he intends to hire private counsel. A Preliminary Hearing is scheduled for January 17, 2023, at 1 PM.
