Kewanee Police Chief Stephen Kijanowski and Deputy Chief Michael Minx joined Wake Up Tri-Counties this week to talk about LPR’s or License Plate Readers. Several License Plate Readers have been set up in Kewanee. These License Plate Readers are intended as investigative tools and not as tools for enforcing traffic laws. Misconceptions about the use of the cameras have some people questioning why they are being used by Kewanee Police. The Chief and Deputy Chief assure the public that the LPR’s are simply in place for the purpose of tracking stolen vehicles, fleeing suspects, or determining if a dangerous or wanted suspect has passed by one of these License Plate Readers. The cameras can be used to create investigative timelines determining if a suspect vehicle passed an LPR at a particular time of day. You can hear the Chief and Deputy Chief explain the use of and the value of License Plate Readers in this Wake Up Tri-Counties interview.
