Two officers were injured attempting to rescue a woman from a fire late Friday night in Geneseo, according to a release from the Geneseo Police and Fire Departments. On December 23, 2022, around 11:42 PM, a 911 caller said there were flames visible from a house fire in the 500 block of Meadow Street. Geneseo Police Officers and Henry County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene and observed flames coming from the house. Two people were able to escape the fire and reported to Officers that there was still one adult female left in the residence, according to the press release. Officers and Deputies entered the structure in an attempt to rescue the female occupant. They were forced to exit the structure due to the heavy smoke and flames. One Geneseo Police Officer and one Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The Geneseo Fire Protection District arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire. Police and Fire Personnel later located the deceased female in the residence.
The fire is under investigation by the Illinois Fire Marshall’s Office, Geneseo Police Department and the Geneseo Fire Protection District. Anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to call Geneseo Police Department at 309-944-5141.
