Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder and Winter Blues Support and Treatment Options Available

SHARE NOW

As winter arrives, the Henry and Stark County Health Department, together with First Choice Healthcare’s Behavioral Health team, is raising awareness about the “winter blues” and the more serious Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. While many experience low moods as days get shorter and colder, SAD is characterized by deeper symptoms, such as persistent depression, low energy, and loss of interest in daily activities. Treatment options include light therapy, counseling, and medication. Support is available for those struggling with these symptoms—residents are encouraged to contact First Choice Healthcare at 309-852-5272 for counseling, therapy, and mental health services for all ages.

Symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder may include:

Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day
Feeling hopeless or worthless
Having low energy
Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
Problems sleeping
Changes in your appetite or weight
Feeling sluggish or agitated
Having difficulty concentrating
Having frequent thoughts of death or suicide
