The Environmental Health Division of the Henry and Stark County Health Departments highlights the importance of adhering to updated food safety regulations as community events season approaches. Local festivities, including fairs and farmers markets, may involve food service mandates that have been revised. Event and food vendors must ensure permits are obtained ahead of time, with applications submitted promptly. Megan Washburn emphasizes the goal of educating the community rather than enforcing strict rules. This initiative aims to assure residents of food safety by supporting event coordinators, vendors, and the community.
The Health Department urges you to secure the necessary permits and adhere to sanitation standards. Applications must be submitted five business days before your event to avoid late fees. Homemade food preparation without a permit is strictly prohibited. Event coordinators must file applications ten business days in advance. Even at Farmer’s Markets, rules apply to samples and processed foods. Consumers should verify that food vendors hold appropriate licenses. Ensure food safety and compliance; contact the Environment Health Services at 309-852-0197 for guidance if you’re uncertain about the regulations.
Megan Washburn, Environmental Health Practitioner with the Henry and Stark County Health Departments, states, “The aim of this process is not to dictate rules but to educate our community on best practices. We have seen a lot of rogue food service operations lately, and we really want local food handlers to have the latest and most up-to-date information on food safety so residents can be confident in the safety of these non-traditional venues. By applying with the Health Department local, food vendors can have our staff’s expertise and guidance at their disposal.”
Washburn adds, “Offering this education to local event food vendors really is a win-win for everyone. Event Coordinators can ensure they are organizing a safe and approved event, food vendors can be confident in the food they prepare and serve, and local residents can rest assured that food purchased at local events is safe.”
