Victim Disarms Suspect During Shooting in Kewanee, Suspect Arrested and Faces Attempted Murder and Multiple Felony Charges

Victim disarms suspect in Kewanee shooting on June 2, 2026. The suspect fled the scene but was quickly arrested.

A 20-year-old man is recovering after a shooting in Kewanee on June 2nd. Police were called to the 200 block of North Boss Street, where the victim was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He received immediate medical aid before being airlifted to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria and is expected to survive. The victim managed to disarm Guzman, who fled the scene but was quickly apprehended. Authorities identified the suspect as Samuel Guzman, 34, who was located and arrested without incident following a felony traffic stop in the 2000 block of Kenville Road. Investigators believe the shooting followed an argument between the two men, who know each other.

Guzman is charged with Attempted Murder – Class X Felony, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm – Class X Felony, Possession of a Weapon by a Felon – Class 2 Felony, and Possession of a Defaced Firearm – Class 3 Felony.

A  Class X felony carries a potential sentence ranging from 6 to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Authorities note that some charges may be subject to sentencing enhancements, potentially increasing penalties. This is still an active investigation, with the Kewanee Police Department expressing gratitude to the Kewanee Fire Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, and the Henry County State’s Attorney’s Office for their cooperation.

According to the release, “The investigation included victim and witness statements, suspect statements, review of video footage, and the collection of evidence. The Illinois State Police assisted with evidence collection at the scene. The suspected firearm used in the incident was recovered.”

The investigation is ongoing.
