A major round hay bale fire kept emergency crews busy for nearly seven hours yesterday as volunteers from Neponset, Mineral, Buda, Manlius, and Annawan joined Sheffield firefighters to battle the flames. With vast amounts of water used, the team successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to additional bales. Community members stepped in, providing water, Gatorade, and meals to support the responders. The Sheffield Rescue Unit was also on scene for assistance. All responders were volunteers, dedicating their time and effort. As a precaution, Chief Lanxon has issued a burn ban for the entire Sheffield Fire Protection District until further notice.
“All of these men and women are volunteers who gave away their day to help. It’s truly an amazing thing and we’re lucky to have had their help.”
