Sara Billiet joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to introduce the new Director of the Kewanee Public Library, David Eckert, and talk about upcoming events heading into the holiday season. The Kewanee Public Library has officially welcomed new director David Eckert, who brings three decades of library experience, including a start as a children’s librarian. Library staff are encouraging community participation in several upcoming programs. Due to Baker & Taylor’s closure, the library’s Boundless app for ebooks will be replaced by The Palace Project soon, while Hoopla remains unaffected. Residents are invited to donate extra seeds for the library’s growing seed exchange and contribute nonperishable food and hygiene items for the local food pantry—the collection runs through December 22nd. Santa visits the library on December 13th, complete with photo ops and activity kits for kids.
David, the new library director, brings three decades of library experience—including a stint as a children’s librarian—and even has a background in music, having played double bass professionally before joining the library world. David and his family are settling into the area, buying a house in Toulon, and are excited about the bigger yard for their two large dogs. He’s looking forward to the region’s Amtrak station for easy trips to Chicago and exploring local towns like the Quad Cities, Peoria, and Princeton. David hopes his innovative ideas from past roles will benefit the library community, even if he may have to start making homemade pizza.

Families are invited to the Community Room for a festive gathering with plenty of holiday cheer. Scooters will provide complimentary treats, ensuring everyone gets a sweet taste of the season. Attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras for festive photo opportunities with Santa. Each child will receive a free “12 Days ’til Christmas Countdown” activity kit to take home, keeping the excitement alive. This community event is designed to bring neighbors together and create lasting Christmas memories for all participants.

The Kewanee Public Library is inviting residents to make a meaningful impact this season by contributing non-perishable food items and monetary donations, all aimed at supporting the local food pantry. Contributions are being accepted at the library’s main floor circulation desk, starting November 11th through December 22nd. Among the top requested donations are canned meats, pasta, peanut butter, and personal care items such as toiletries. Organizers hope the drive will help ease the burden on community members facing food insecurity. Every donation, whether food or funds, will go directly to helping families in need this holiday season.
Organizers stress that behind every item is a neighbor, a friend, or a family making impossible choices. By coming together, even small gestures become powerful acts of hope. United, compassion becomes action—and this season, your donation could be the difference someone needs.

The Seed Library at Kewanee Public Library is calling on local gardeners to help replenish its stock. If you have leftover flower, herb, or fruit and vegetable seeds from this year’s harvest, consider donating. Contributions can be dropped off at the Lower Level Reference Desk, clearly labeled with both plant name and harvest year. These donations support fellow gardening enthusiasts, encourage learning, and foster community spirit. Each seed shared means more neighbors with the opportunity to grow their own gardens. Get involved and help the Seed Library continue to bloom—one donation at a time.
