Western Illinois University closed the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses on Thursday, September 5, 2024, due to the ongoing police presence near the campus in Macomb. According to school officials, the threat has been contained, but a perimeter around the scene was established. Caution is necessary, and everyone should avoid the area of the 300 block of North Normal Street. The university residence hall will remain open, and the dining centers will be open from 11 AM to 1:30 PM. All morning athletic practices and team activities are postponed at both campuses, including any other WIU campus activities.

“When the University is closed, employees will be dismissed from and paid for their regular working shifts. Employees working in essential positions may be required to work their regular hours during a total shutdown. The determination of essential versus nonessential employees will be made by the supervisor based on the nature of the advisory situation.”

The WIU policy on limiting University operations due to emergency conditions is available in the Administrative Procedures Handbook at wiu.edu/policies/emergency.php.
