As Illinois gears up for a sunny Labor Day weekend, the Illinois Conservation Police has a vital reminder for all boaters: wearing a life jacket is crucial. This year has seen a concerning rise in boating-related fatalities, with 15 reported deaths, 13 of which were due to drowning.

The risk is real, even as overall incident rates have slightly declined. Lt. Curt Lewis emphasizes the role of life jackets in ensuring a fun and safe boating experience. Additional safety measures include abstaining from alcohol while operating boats, using engine cut-off switches, and understanding boating rules thoroughly, especially when renting.

Authorities will be closely monitoring waterways for compliance to ensure a safe holiday for everyone.
