Canton Man Arrested After Road Rage Incident in Macomb

On Tuesday, October 29th, at approximately 5:36 p.m., Macomb Police Officers were sent to the 300 block of E. Jackson regarding a potential road rage incident. The caller indicated the driver of a Red Ford pickup had brandished a handgun during the incident and had since fled that area. The McDonough
County Sheriff’s Office located the suspect vehicle, performed a traffic stop, and driver was detained. The suspect was identified as Oliver Hoffman, 18 years old, of Canton, IL.

Upon searching Hoffman’s vehicle, several firearms were located, linking Hoffman to the road rage incident. Hoffman was arrest and transported to the McDonough County Jail for questioning and processing.

During the investigation, a search of Hoffman’s apartment was conducted in an attempt to locate other items of contraband. Officers were able to locate other firearms, firearm related items, and equipment utilized to manufacture firearm parts.

Hoffman was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Manufacturing of an Assault Weapon.

While investigating incidents which occurred within Macomb, it was determined Hoffman was a suspect in an incident which had occurred in rural McDonough County earlier in the day. Hoffman was charged with additional offenses by the MCSO and subsequently detained pending a court appearance. Please see the MCSO’s media release for further details regarding their investigation.

The Macomb Police Department would like to thank the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office and the Canton Police Department for their swift assistance. A tragedy was likely prevented.
