MPD Issues Update On March 16 Shooting (Updated 6/5/24)

The Macomb Police Department provided an additional follow-up to serve as notification that the Illinois State Police (ISP) have concluded their investigation of the incident and will be forwarding the matter to the McDonough County State’s Attorney for review.

According to a release issued by MPD Chief Jeff Hamer, the State’s Attorney’s Office will be examining the investigation for consideration of any further action that, itself, may warrant further investigation. Per Department policy, Chief
Hamer will be conducting an internal investigation concerning adherence to department policy and procedure in the incident.

The Macomb Police Department has pledged to continue to be as transparent as possible and will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.


MACOMB, IL – The Macomb Police Department (MPD) issued a status update on the investigation into the officer-involved shooting that happened during a domestic disturbance on N. Charles Street in Macomb on March 16th that resulted in the deaths of a man and a child, as well as two officers being place on administrative leave.

In a release issued by Macomb Police Chief Jeff Hamer, the MPD affirmed that the Illinois State Police (ISP) are still diligently investigating the case and will be sharing their findings with the McDonough County State’s Attorney. The ISP has assured that they’ll notify the MPD when that happens and the MPD will provide an update to the affected families and public at that time.

Following that, the States Attorney will review all the data and evidence. The MPD has pledged to continue to cooperate in any manner they can, and expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and empathy for all involved.
