WIU Corbin/Olson Commons, Union Being Used as Cooling Centers

SHARE NOW

Due to the extreme summer temperatures and high humidity that will affect the region this week, Western Illinois University’s Corbin/Olson commons and University Union are designated as cooling centers for area residents.

Corbin and Olson commons will be open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. for anyone in need of a place to cool off. Drinking water refilling stations are located on the first floors of Corbin and Olson halls.

The Union is open 7am-11pm Monday – Saturday and 8am-10pm on Sunday. A drinking water refilling station is located near the University Union Bookstore entrance and on the first floor near the Office of Student Engagement. Vending machines are available in the lower level.

Horrabin Hall will be temporarily out of service this week due to ongoing issues with the building’s air conditioning system. The chiller, which is essential for maintaining a comfortable environment within the building, is currently offline.

Efforts to resolve the issue are underway. The University’s Facilities Management team has been in contact with the manufacturer’s representative to explore long-term repair options, as well as the possibility of installing a temporary chiller. However, due to the timing of the heatwave expected this week, these solutions will not be in place in time to maintain adequate cooling in the building.

Classes and activities scheduled in Horrabin Hall will be relocated and students, faculty and staff will receive further instructions from their respective departments.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
