Nine young photographers from across Illinois have earned top honors in the 2025 Cream of the Crop Photography Contest. State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced the winners, all students aged 8 to 18, who impressed judges with their creativity behind the lens. Each artist will receive a Bright Start 529 college savings scholarship, encouraging their educational journeys ahead. The award-winning photos are set to be showcased both at the Illinois State Fair and within the State Treasurer’s Office in Springfield. Event organizers say the competition highlights the diverse perspectives and talents of Illinois youth, shining a spotlight on the state’s budding artists. “Congratulations to the young photographers who have showcased their talents and creativity in the Cream of the Crop competition this year,” Frerichs said. “Their photos illustrate the beauty and diversity of agriculture in Illinois.”

Award-winning student photographs will be showcased August 7-17 inside the Treasurer’s Tent at the Illinois State Fair. The Cream of the Crop contest, now in its 13th year, drew 205 entries from young photographers across three age groups. Top winners receive Bright Start 529 scholarships valued at $1,000, $500, and $250 for first through third place, respectively. The first-place photos will also be displayed in the State Treasurer’s Office lobby, while the top finishers in each category are featured on the State Treasurer’s website. Photos from the contest will be included in the upcoming 2025-2026 Ag Invest calendar. You can see the photos of the top three finishers in each of the three age categories on the State Treasurer’s website.
