Accused murderer on home monitoring caught with guns, drugs

An accused murderer on electronic home monitoring was caught with illegal drugs and guns. According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, deputies conducted a compliance check on Bertell Johnson earlier this month and they noticed photos on social media of him carrying a rifle and a handgun.

Johnson had been placed on electronic monitoring while awaiting trial on charges that include first-degree murder. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said the bust “perfectly illustrates why individuals charged with violent crimes should not be placed on electronic monitoring.”

Formula One eyes Chicago

NASCAR is coming back this summer for a second Chicago street race, and now it appears the Formula One racing circuit may be on the way to the Windy City.

Formula One officials have reportedly registered trademarks related to a Chicago Grand Prix. A race would potentially add to Formula One’s U.S. race schedule, alongside the Las Vegas, Miami and Austin races.

Historic tree falls

A Virden man’s home was damaged after a massive oak tree toppled over, caving in part of his roof. Both the house and the tree held historical significance for the small Central Illinois town.

The tree was planted nearly 160 years ago by a woman who took an acorn from the cemetery while attending Abraham Lincoln’s funeral in Springfield. As a result, the tree was considered a memorial for President Lincoln.
