Measles vaccines continue
Health officials say the new strategy to head off a growing cluster of measles cases in northern Illinois is to offer a second vaccination.
The Chicago Department of Public Health said everyone at the city’s largest migrant shelter should be receiving a measles vaccine dose 28 days after their first shot. There have been 26 confirmed cases of measles in the Chicago area.
New Amtrak routs possible
There is more talk about possible new Amtrak routes between Chicago and Peoria and another line between Peoria and the Quad Cities.
Last year, former U.S. Representative and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced Peoria was selected for the Federal Railroad Administration Corridor Identification Program, which is considered a major step toward Peoria passenger train service.
During a visit to Normal this week, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said it will take state government cooperation and involvement to have taxpayers subsidize the service.
Shipwreck found
Nearly 140 years after being lost, a ship that left Chicago for Michigan has been found.
The Michigan Shipwreck Research Association announced that it has found the remains of the steamship Milwaukee, which was lost in 1886. The group said it first located the ship in June 2023 using side-scan sonar.
The Milwaukee collided with another boat during foggy conditions and sank. All crew members were able to survive.
