Objection filed against Trump ballot access

A petition filed by five voters on Thursday seeks to bar former President Donald Trump from the Illinois Republican primary ballot in March.

The petition, similar to those filed in other states, claims he is ineligible to hold office because, petitioners allege, he encouraged and did little to stop the January 2021 protests at the U.S. Capitol.

The Illinois State Board of Elections is set to hear objections to the proposed ballot at its Jan. 11 meeting.

Dog illness concerns continue

Animal shelters around Illinois continue to deal with a respiratory sickness affecting dogs. Officials said the respiratory illness, which first emerged in several states in November, has spread quickly throughout the state.

Some shelters have been forced to temporarily suspend animal intakes to deal with the sickness and keep it from spreading. The Vermillion County Animal Shelter says they have dozens of dogs that are affected.

David Soul passes away

Actor and Illinois native David Soul has passed away. Soul, who earned fame as the blonde half of the law enforcement duo “Starsky & Hutch” in the popular 1970s television series, has died at the age of 80.

The show ran on ABC from 1975 through 1979 and garnered high ratings. Soul, who was born in Chicago in 1943, also scored a pop hit in 1977 with the song “Don’t Give Up on Us.”
