DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – The U.S. military said early Monday it began a new round of airstrikes targeting Iran.
The U.S. military’s Central Command announced the strikes, now into their ninth straight night.
Activists in Iran began reporting explosions around 2:30 a.m. local time.
“The strikes will continue degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” Central Command said in a statement.
Meantime, one U.S. Service member has died, and the military is trying to verify the remains of a soldier who went missing in action during Iranian strikes this weekend, according to the U.S. Central Command.
Military officials are withholding the identities of the casualties pending notification of family members.
The developments come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. The United States and Iran have exchanged military strikes for roughly a week after the collapse of a memorandum of understanding that had been aimed at reducing hostilities and maintaining peace between the two sides.
U.S. officials have pledged a response to the attacks, vowing that those responsible will be held accountable.
