Memorial mass held to remember school fire victims

A memorial mass was held Sunday to remember the fire at Our Lady of the Angels School, in which 95 people were killed 65 years ago. The fire started near the foot of a stairway of the school, which at the time had an enrollment of nearly 1,600. Some students had to jump from second-floor windows to escape the blaze. The fire received worldwide attention, and images of some of the 92 children who died were publicized. The remnants of the building were torn down and replaced by a new building. The school closed in 1999.

A German renewable energy company plans to file applications to construct a multi-county wind farm in Central Illinois. The company would build about 60 wind turbines in Sangamon and Montgomery counties over the next several years. The total project would eventually create 350 megawatts of electricity. That amount is equivalent to about half of Springfield’s power needs.
