A lawsuit has been filed that claims a cow at the Cape May County Park and Zoo seriously injured a teen girl two years ago, causing injuries that led to surgery and physical therapy.

According to a report on NJ.com, the girl’s family filed the lawsuit Friday in the Superior Court of Cape May County, naming the zoo, The County of Cape May, the county zoological society, and Middle Township as defendants.

The incident allegedly occurred in November of 2021. The teen from Salem County was attempting to take a photo with “Jilly The Cow” in the petting area of the zoo when, according to the suit,  the animal suddenly head-butted her, causing her head to “forcefully snap back” as she fell to the ground. The suit also claims the zoo was negligent in posting warnings and protective barriers, allowing guests to get too close to the cow.

An attorney for the county told NJ.com the county legal department had not been served the complaint as of publication of their article on Monday November 6 2023.
